Last month we developed the vision. Now is the time to tap the source of cosmic anger so that we may overcome those forces within us that are preventing us from actualizing the vision. Just as the tribe of Dan possessed both the strength to overcome and destroy (as exemplified in the figure of Shimshon in his one man battle against the Philistines), and the weakness of avodah zorah (in their worship of the statue of Mica), so too, during my journey to Dan's territory, I saw within myself this raging strength to overcome and this painful, transparent insight of my weaknesses. However, as soon as one can sincerely face their weaknesses then one is given the power to overcome them.
The figure of Shimshon destroying the temples of the Philistines is depicted in the foreground. The mental cages and mind constructs amidst the ruins represent my personal mental blocks, obstructing my connection to the truth. Just as the worship of Mica involved predictions and other types of fallibilities of our thought processes that we try to use in order to outwit or second guess G-d, so too, we have remnants of ways to cope with our insecurity of the unknown rather than developing our humility and trust in G-d's Omnipotence.
Our sages speak of the connection of Dan's weakness for idol worship with an intrinsic weakness in sexuality. Shlomite, who was raped by an Egyptian, and whose son later cursed G-d, was susceptible to such an incident because of this weakness in her tribe. The figure being overthrown in the right foreground of the painting represents this weakness and the snake which cunningly causes the horse to overthrow the rider again represents this strength to overcome. Dan was likened to the snake who bites the horse and overthrows the rider.
The successful struggle between these two dichotomous forces allows one to connect to the path of eternal life which is paved on the landscape of Dan's inheritance in the north. Since, in reality, Dan's inheritance is so majestic and beautiful it seems impossible to claim that one can tap into this positive anger. However there is a raging strength which silently awaits to be uncovered by any soul who wishes to tap into and heal this enormous capacity of rage for truth, the passion needed to pave one way through actualizing vision.
The letter ayin, through which this month was formed, itself means "eye". This is the time to rectify our insight and to control what outside stimulus we allow to enter into the universe of our souls. The eye depicted in the foreground represents an opening to a whole new world. Looking at the wrong things can cause distractions that nurture fantasies and illusions which throw us off the path towards unity and clarity.
